Digital catalogues raisonnés of artists
A catalogue raisonné is a «work that draws up the most complete inventory possible of the painted, drawn, carved or engraved works of the same artist» (Dictionnaire de l'Académie française). Traditionally in paper format, catalogues raisonnés now exist in digital format. The Museum Service of France offers below an overview of these reference digital scientific publications.

What is a catalogue raisonné?
A catalogue raisonné is a methodical, descriptive and critical compilation of the entire work of an artist or art form. Thus, the catalogues raisonnés “list, describe, situate in time, classify and, if possible, reproduce all the works known to the artists in question” (Droit du Marché de l'art, Dalloz).
A scientific publication
This scientific publication is the result of a long research work, often collaborative.
This document aims to draw up an exhaustive and authentic list of the works of the artist or the domain. In this, it is part of a less eventful time than the temporary exhibition catalogue.
The works, most often illustrated, are classified in chronological order or according to a thematic organization. They are identified, described and commented on.
A set of other useful information can be added: historical context, biography, cartography, documentary sources, etc.
A traditionally printed work
Catalogues raisonnés of artists or themes are part of reference works, traditionally published in paper format. The Print Council of America lists printed catalogues raisonnés: The Print Council Index to Oeuvre-Catalogues of Prints (Site visited on 02/06/2020).
A publication that takes advantage of digital
While the research and analysis work remains fundamental, the technical evolutions related to digital now facilitate the production, but also the updating, of catalogues raisonnés.
The corpus of works and the dissemination of knowledge about them can thus be updated directly online.
Their content is scalable, multifaceted and accessible to the greatest number.
A directory of artists' digital catalogues raisonnés
The Service des musées de France offers below an overview of these reference digital scientific publications. This directory is updated periodically. However, if you see inactive links, or absent artists, do not hesitate to let us know.
For scientific reasons, it seemed relevant to also reference online matches.
